What Is Somatic Coaching? A Beginner's Guide

The Basic Idea

Somatic coaching works with the body, not just the mind. 'Soma' simply means 'the living body,' and somatic approaches are built on the understanding that our experiences, including stress and trauma, are stored physically as well as mentally. Talking about a problem can only get you so far if your body is still holding tension around it.

How It's Different From Talk-Based Coaching

In a traditional coaching session, you might talk through a challenge and come up with strategies. In somatic coaching, we also pay attention to what's happening in your body while you talk: your breath, posture, tension patterns, and physical sensations. This gives us direct access to information that words alone can't capture, and often leads to shifts that stick.

What a Session Might Include

Sessions are trauma-informed and paced to your comfort. Depending on what you need, we might work with breath, movement, grounding techniques, or simply slowing down to notice what your body is telling you. The goal isn't to relive difficult experiences, but to build a felt sense of safety and choice in your own body.

Who Somatic Coaching Can Help

This approach tends to resonate with people who feel 'stuck' despite doing a lot of thinking and talking about their challenges, people managing chronic stress or anxiety, and anyone wanting a more embodied, whole-person approach to growth. If that sounds like you, a discovery call is a low-pressure way to see if it's a fit.
